My "big" boy

About a year ago I decided it was time to get serious about potty training Stetson, I had a new baby and didn't want to have two in diapers, plus I would be off work for the summer - perfect opportunity!  However, I learned the hard way that it is the kid that decides when it is time to get potty trained - not the mom.  Summer came and went, and he was still in diapers.  I got lots of advice and ideas from lots of experienced moms, but nothing seemed to work for Stetson.  The hardest part was that he spent 8 hours a day at a babysitter, and I hated to ask the babysitters to try to work with him when he showed no interest or desire at all.  So I took advantage of my long Thanksgiving weekend and dedicated my time to potty training Stetson.  After a rather frustrating few days and lots of laundry, I decided to give him another month and try again during my Christmas break.  After about his fifth cold bath one day, we were both in tears, so I wrapped him up in a blanket and held him as we rocked for a long time.  I was frustrated, and I could tell he was frustrated, and we weren't getting anywhere.  I decided to put the diaper back on and leave him alone.  We didn't drop the idea, in fact we talked about it ALL the time.  Each time I changed his diaper we talked about how nice it would be to not have to do that anymore, and every time he found something he wanted REALLY bad, I would tell him that only "big" boys got to have things like that, so once he started going in the potty and being a "big" boy, we could get one for him.  A few months later as I was setting up his new "big boy" bed, we talked about how big he was getting.  He climbed in the clean sheets and I kissed his forehead and said, "you're getting to be such a big boy."  He got real serious and said, "mom, maybe now I could start going in the potty."  I wanted jump for joy and scream and shout, but instead I just smiled and said, "that would be so awesome, and then you would REALLY be a big boy."  He smiled and said, "yup".  I wish I could say it was that easy, and that he was potty trained within a week, but I can't - we still had a long road ahead of us, but at least now he had a desire.

So he started wearing pullups, and he tried to keep them dry so that the picture on the front wouldn't fade away.  He did pretty good as long as someone took him to the bathroom every couple hours.  Then we hit a plateau, and I felt like I was training myself instead of him.  Plus, he still refused to poop in the toilet - he would literally suck it back in and hold it for hours.  Then we started going downhill again, and he treated the pullups just like a diaper - no big deal.  So my awesome sister-in-law, Suzie, said, "next time you bring him to my house, bring him in underwear and bring A LOT of extras."  How cool is it that she was willing to help out with something like this.  That day went well, and he only had one accident!  The next day Kenny's mom was tending him, and she was willing to help out too.  On day two he didn't have an accident at all, AND he pooped in the toilet!  I don't know what these two AMAZING women did, but it worked!  And I will FOREVER be grateful to them for it!  From then on, he wore underwear all the time, he had an accident here and there, but who doesn't?  Still, we had one more hurdle to cross - he still wouldn't poop in the toilet.  I considered letting him live at Grandma Black's house for awhile because he did it there.  Instead, he went several days where he didn't go at all, and I started to get worried.  Then, he started going in his underwear, and each time he would get a cold bath.  He started getting a little cocky, saying, "I like cold baths."  But as soon as he felt the cold water he would start to scream.  I must have focused too much on keeping the underwear clean, because then he started to take them off and then poop on the floor.  After one of these episodes, I found him giving himself a cold bath!  The good news is, that was a turning point for him, and he has gone in the toilet ever since.  It has been a LONG road with LOTS of bumps, but I think I can finally say that my "big" boy is potty trained!  HALLELUJAH!!!  Way to go Stetson!  We are super proud of you!  Now we can FINALLY get that trampoline you have been wanting!

One of Stetson's many "treasures".  He was so excited that he found all these "coconuts" in our yard!

How does Lucy measure up?

Lucy LOVES to eat, and she is a chubby little girl. Of course I am a paranoid mother, and I worry - is she TOO big for her age? People keep telling me not to worry, that she is just healthy, but here is what I have to compare her to . . .

These two girls LOVE their Grandpa Grover

her cousin Aspen, six months older, three pounds less, two sizes smaller in clothes and a size smaller in diapers. She is a couple inches taller than Lucy, and wears bigger shoes, but still! These girls will be in the same grade, and hopefully they will be good friends - what girl wants to be known as "the big one"? (A boy, maybe, but not a girl!)

So, I pulled out some photos and records of Stetson at a year old, and here is what I found:

Stetson:
-21 lbs
-28 inches
-6 teeth

Lucy:
-22 lbs
-28 inches
-2 teeth

Their hands and feet are about the same size, though Lucy's fingers are longer and thinner.  Lucy is just below the 50th percentile for her age in both height and weight.  So, I guess she is fine, I just need to quit comparing her to her cousin - sorry Lucy!

I will be honest, Lucy has spoiled me!  In my experience, an easy pregnancy equals a harder kid, and a harder pregnancy equals an easier kid.  My pregnancy with Lucy was harder in lots of ways, but she has been an easier baby in lots of ways:

-Lucy is usually really good about going to sleep.  Just put her in her bed with a Binky, a fleece blanket and her glow seahorse that plays music, turn off the lights and shut the door.  As long as it is dark and quiet, she sleeps really good.  However, she is not a deep sleeper like her brother, and gets woke up very easily.  The good news is that she is pretty happy, even if she just got woke up.
-Lucy is a good eater.  She will eat or drink just about anything we give her.  She drinks out of a sippy cup really well, and even though she only has two teeth, she can eat just about anything we are eating.  I know exactly when Lucy is done, she will either hold up her hand and shake her head if I am feeding her, or start putting her food on the floor instead of in her mouth if she is feeding herself.

-Lucy is happy and pleasant most of the time.  She likes almost everyone, and though she likes her schedule, she is pretty good to roll with the punches if necessary.  However, she has what I call a "quick" temper - it comes on suddenly, and passes just as quickly.  Lucy has pretty good pain tolerance though, and often gets up from a crash without a tear; also, even when she is super sick she doesn't complain, she just deals with it.

-Lucy says "ma-ma" when she is sad, and "da-da" when she is happy; "ba-ba" usually means ball, which she loves; "yeah" is her response when you ask her a questions; and the latest, "uh-oh", she says this when she drops something or when she falls down - so cute!  She likes to click her tongue and purse her lips together and spit (not cool when her mouth is full of cereal or sweet potatoes).  Lucy has the cutest laugh, it must be contagious because you can't help but laugh along with her!  It is not super loud, more like a chuckle, and it doesn't take much to get her to do it.  When she laughs really hard, she usually gets the hiccups, just like Stetson.

-Lucy crawls everywhere, but doesn't climb near as much as Stetson did (thank goodness!).  She loves to go up the stairs, but hasn't figured out how to go down yet.  After a couple crashes, going head first, she prefers to just sit there and cry until someone comes to rescue her. Lucy LOVES to walk/run with someone holding on to her fingers, but is not quite confident enough yet to go on her own (if you let go of her fingers, she sits down).  She stands on her own, and will take one step, always with the right foot.
-Lucy loves to load and unload things, and is very good at pushing buttons (much to Stetson's dismay, when she gets the remote and turns his movie off).  She has also taken an interest in books, and will often sit and look at a book (after she has unloaded the bookshelf, of course).  If you say "pat-a cake" or "yay", she'll start clapping her hands.

-Lucy's eyes are still a beautiful blue - yay!  Her hair has a red tint in the sun, but looks like it will probably be blond.  Her skin is super light and fair, so we are going to have to get used to packing around sunscreen!  She has chubby legs with cute little rolls, and the cutest chubby cheeks ever - I love to kiss them.  She must be pretty warm blooded, because she doesn't get cold easily.  She often gets too hot though, and when this happens her cheeks get bright red.

-Lucy LOVES animals, especially dogs.  She is not afraid of them at all, and loves to sit and pet them and lay on them; sometimes she is a little rough, pulling their hair and poking their eyes, but luckily we have very good, patient dogs, and they just put up with it.

It's a good thing Jasper is a  patient dog!
We love this little angel, and are so grateful that she is a part of our family.  Congratulations on turning one Lucy!

Someone we know just turned 1. . .

MISS LUCY MAE!

Has it really been a year?  I guess so, look at the change in our beautiful baby girl . . .

May 16, 2011
I took the day off work, in hopes that we could take the kids out for a picnic or something fun for Lucy's birthday, but it turned out to be pretty cold and windy and Lucy had a bit of a cold, so we just stayed inside.  We did take the kids to Patio for lunch and ice cream.  Lucy got her own baby cone, and she ate the WHOLE thing!  It was nice to be able to spend the entire day with my birthday girl, and I think the kids both enjoyed having me home.

I wanted to make Lucy a GIANT cupcake for her first birthday.  I realize that it doesn't really look like a cupcake, but I tried.  Plus, Lucy didn't seem to care, and it was going to get destroyed anyway!

From the side

We also made a bunch of regular cupcakes to share with the family (though they weren't near as fancy as Lucy's).

Yes, she did grab that cupcake right after I snapped the picture!  But, she was very careful, and didn't mess it up at all - that's my girl!

This little chick has her daddy wrapped around her finger!  But that's how it's supposed to be, right?

Birthday flowers from Daddy

Suzie and Steve were kind enough to host Lucy's birthday party - thanks guys!

The birthday girl with all her gifts

Kenny grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, and everyone brought yummy salads for dinner. I think everyone took too long to eat because Lucy got a little anxious.  Luckily she didn't open anything, just tore off all the bows.

Who needs cake when you can chew on a bow?

I don't think Lucy opened any of her presents by herself, and I know there were a couple she didn't even get to help with.  Stetson was a very good "helper", and made sure that we didn't waste any time getting Lucy's gifts opened.  Lucy didn't seem to mind at all, as long as she got the gifts; lots of dolls and clothes, exactly what little girls want!  Thanks to everyone for the wonderful gifts!

The purpose of this cute hat is to keep the sun off that super fair skin this summer!

And now, the moment we have all been waiting for . . .
DESTRUCTION OF THE BIRTHDAY CAKE!

Is that cute, or what?
At first Lucy just played with the icing, rubbing it all over everything.  Sorry about the chair Suzie!
YAY!!!

She kept trying to stand up, but would often just slip back down due to the icing all over the seat.  After slipping, she would get mad and throw her head back, right into the cake, so the back of her head was covered in icing as well.
"Check this out - I'm making a mess, and it's okay!"

This was the best!  Lucy started using the cake as a drum, then she would flip her hands to try to get the cake and icing off, and it went EVERYWHERE!  So much for the tablecloth we put under the high chair - there was cake and icing flying through the air and landing on the carpet and furniture, as well as on innocent bystanders!  Sorry guys!  Luckily, Suzie wasn't at all mad about the mess, and we were able to get it cleaned up.

This is serious - no more sitting down on the job!

It turns out Lucy didn't eat much of her birthday cake, I guess she would rather wear it.  Just before we hosed her off, we sat her right on top of the cake, she seemed pretty proud of herself!

And there she is, the birthday girl in all her glory, covered from head to toe in icing and cake

Thanks everyone for the food, the gifts, letting us destroy your house, and just for being an awesome family!  Lucy is such a joy to have around, and we are so grateful she is a part of our family.  We love you Lucy!

Mothers

What a wonderful opportunity to celebrate mothers everywhere!  We had two new mothers down at our barn, one the day before Mother's Day, and one the day after.  I love to just sit and watch these new little ones!  When I took the kids down to see Misty and her baby on Saturday, Stetson pointed to Misty and said, "Mom, that baby is with his grandma."  When I asked where his mommy was, he pointed to one of the other sorrel horses.  I thought it was pretty funny, cuz grandma's usually have grey hair, right?

This is Classy and her baby boy.  He just stood there and posed for his picture, he didn't seem afraid of the kids at all.  I guess Classy can be the mommy since she has brown hair.

Sunday morning I was telling Stetson that it was Mother's Day, and we needed to make some cards for Grandma Grover and Grandma Black.  Of course he was excited about that, especially when I got out the stickers - this kid LOVES stickers!  Kenny walked by and said, "Stetson, did you tell mommy happy mother's day?"  He said, "no, mother's day is for Grandma Grover and Grandma Black, not for mom."  And I have to say I agree with him; maybe someday I will be worthy of that great honor, but for now we will celebrate the two best mothers I know.  I did, however, get to pose for a picture with the two cutest kids I know.  I never knew I could love anyone as much as I love these guys . . . and that is the joy of being a mother!
There is my awesome mother, right in the center of an awesome family.  She is my hero and my best friend.  Thanks mom, for all that you do and all that you are!
And here is my amazing mother-in-law holding little Lucy Mae.  She is an awesome mother and a super fun grandmother!  We love you Grandma Black!
Where would we be without our Mothers?  We wouldn't be!  What an amazing job that doesn't have a quitting time or retirement, you don't get vacation or sick leave.  It is a 24-7 job that doesn't end when your kids leave home.  A BIG job with BIG rewards!  Happy Mother's Day to ALL the awesome moms out there!

Happy Easter!

Headed out to the winter range for our Easter Picnic/Branding.  We haven't officially graduated Lucy to Stetson's old carseat, but she got to ride in it this day, and she LOVED it!  I think it had something to do with being able to see!

Stetson and mommy, just waiting in the truck while dad got some ice at the grocery store.  Is that a mischieveous grin or what?

After the calves were all branded, the kids went on an Easter egg hunt.  Lucy found this egg on the bumper of uncle James' truck (with the help of mom, of course).  The other kids were all worried about who found the most eggs, but not Lucy, she was happy with one.

With the help of Laikyn Palmer, Stetson found 17 eggs (that was the limit per kid).  I didn't take him long to figure out that they were all filled with candy.  Thanks so much to Candice and Stormy for helping out with the egg hunt!

So, this is not a very good picture, but I guess there was something wrong with my camera because the other pictures I took didn't take.  Anyway, the Easter Bunny left a trail of eggs from the kids' beds to their Easter baskets.  Lucy was a little young to actually "follow" the trail, but she did have fun playing with the eggs.  Stetson was all concerned that someone had left eggs all over the floor (he is his mother's child), but as soon as he saw the baskets, he was super excited!

Lucy Mae with the treasures she got from the Easter Bunny.

Stetson showing off the super cool stuff he found in his basket.
There was a little timeline with pictures in the Friend showing the last week of Christ's life and telling about it.  I went through this with Stetson, thinking he probably wouldn't remember a word of it.  But he was able to tell his dad the whole story!  And, he has talked about it several time since.  One day we were driving in the car, and he said "mom, I am so glad Jesus came back to life so we can come back to life too."  The gospel really is simple, and I pray that I can have the faith that my children do.  Happy Easter to everyone!!!
